The politics of identity and recognition as the basis for institutional legitimacy and social struggles in the late 20th century. Conflicting views of Hegel's master-slave dialectic are used to relate, e.g., Sartre, Fanon, Bataille, Mer-leau-Ponty, Foucault, Lacan, Levinas, Derrida, Deleuze, Zizek, and Badiou to present-day concerns. (Also offered as Legal Studies 105D. Students cannot receive credit for both courses.)
