The politics of identity and recognition as the basis for institutional legitimacy and social struggles in the late 20th century. Conflicting views of Hegel's master-slave dialectic are used to relate, e.g., Sartre, Fanon, Ba-taille, Merleau-Ponty, Foucault, Lacan, Levinas, Derrida, Deleuze, Zizek, and Badiou to present-day concerns.
