Interdisciplinary examination of selected, richly expressive events (parades, festivals, holidays) and symbols (flags, memorials, temples) which encode nationwide values and understandings (Thanksgiving, New Year's, etc.) or which realize more limited, special meanings (Mardi Gras, rodeo, Kwanza, graduation, bar mitzvah, etc.).
