Military rule, human rights, democratization, populism, and the politics of gender, class, and ethnicity are examined in relation to specific countries in the region. The course then explores the political dimensions of development, poverty, and inequality. Emphasis is placed on the most important conceptual and theoretical frameworks used to understand politics and governance in Latin America. Prerequisites: International Studies 200.
