This seminar examines Japan's transition from a closed, traditional society through the processes of modernization, imperial expansion, defeat and occupation to its postwar recovery and emergence as a global economic power. Particular emphasis will be placed on Japan' s efforts to become an integral part of the modern world and yet retain its traditional social structures and values.Prerequisites: Any History course at the 200-level or permission of the instructor.
