(Same as Asian Studies 261f) A major religious tradition of India, Hinduism is in practice a multiplicity of expressions. This course explores Hinduism's diverse traditions through its history, unifying themes, texts, and popular observances.We will read from the great texts ( Ramayana, Mahabharata), learn about gods and goddesses (krishna, the Great Goddess), and discuss art and ritual. Topics include: body techniques and the material universe (yoga, Tantra); philosophical traditions, concepts (karma, dharma); religious figures (Mirabai); movements (Bhakti). Hinduism's contemporary expressions in India and theWest will be considered in social and historical context. Frequent illustration is provided through videos.
