(Same as History 217s) Long before Operations "Desert Storm" and "Iraqi Freedom,Westerners were drawn to the Middle East. This course will examine the "HolyWar" ofChristians against Moslems and Jews in the Middle Ages and seek to determine underlying causes: the need to defend Constantinople and the Holy Land from the infidel, the greed for markets and the spoils of war, the domestic frustrations that were displaced to an external enemy, the ideology of divine mission and martyrdom.
