An introduction to the history, themes, and methods of analytic philosophy, the dominant movement in twentieth-century English- speaking philosophy. Analytic philosophy uses logic and a careful analysis of language to solve philosophical problems. We will study most of the major figures of this movement, including Frege, Russell, Carnap, Quine, and Kripke. Topics addressed will include the logic of numerical identity, reference and existence, Quine's criticisms of logical positivism, and the meaning of necessity. Meets Humanities I-B requirement S.
