Focusing on the geographical development of global metropolitan regions, this course investigates the socio-spatial processes shaping urban built environments. Specific topics of study include the historical geography of urban location and form, urban land-use patterns; the contemporary restructuring of global cities; problems of suburban sprawl, edge cities, and growth management. The class also explores urban renewal and redevelopment, urban design, public space, and movements for the "New Urbanism" and livablecities. Does not meet a distribution requirement W. Ahmed Prereq.
