A?er an intensive exposure to the concepts of economic growth, development, poverty, and inequality (including measurement issues), the major competing theoretical perspectives on economic growth, development, and underdevelopment up to the current state of the controversy in the field will be covered. These controversies will be carried through to major topics pertaining to economic globalization such as foreign aid, international trade, debt, foreign investment, and IMF/World Bank-led structural adjustment. Poverty and the role of governments and markets are key themes of the course. Meets multicultural requirement; meets Social Sciences III-A requirement S. Khan Prereq.
