(Speaking- and writing-intensive course) The course will advance students' communication skills in Chinese language through the study of contemporary Chinese literary and nonliterary works. The focus of the course is on short stories by famous writers such as yu Hua, Su Tong, andWang Meng. The course also features other types of literary materials such as essays, drama scripts, poems, and television dramas. Materials on pressing social, political, and economic issues from scholarly Chinese journals, newspapers, andWeb sites will also be used. The class will be conducted entirely in Chinese.
