(Speaking-intensive course; taught in English; Same as Gender Studies 333(09)) Seminar on the major themes, genres, and aesthetic conventions of love and the erotic in classical and medieval Indian poetry (in translation from Sanskrit, Tamil, Hindi, and other languages), in relation to theoretical texts. visual, performance genres (miniature paintings and dance). Study of the literary grammar of courtly love (aesthetic mood [rasa], landscape, the situations of love, the typologies of lovers), the transformation of classical conventions in Hindu bhakti and Sufi Muslim mystical poems, the Radha-Krishna myth, and love in folk genres. Focus on women as subjects and personae, and on the articulation of issues of gender, power, relationality, voice, and agency. Meets multicultural requirement; meets Humanities I-A requirement I.
