This course explores the special characteristics of Japanese art and architecture, from the early asymmetry of Jomon pottery and the abstraction of Haniwa figures to the later elite arts of the aristocratic, military, and merchant classes: narrative scroll painting, goldground screens, and the "floating world" ofthe color woodblock print. A historical survey of the arts of Japan, highlighting the interplay of art with religious and political issues. Meets multicultural requirement; meets Humanities I-A requirement A.
