This course will explore representations of violence in African American culture, with special consideration given to literary depictions of rape and lynching. After examining the historical function of violence within the United States, students will perform a comparative analysis of texts authored by black women and men.We will also explore cultural, social, and political movements (abolition, civil rights, black power, black feminism, hip-hop) that have emerged in response to the violent policing of black bodies.
