Prerequisite: SOCI 2201 or SOCI 2105 or permis-sion of instructor. As the twenty-first century unfolds Africa and its peoples are being engulfed by a series of social issues that are set to shape their collec-tive futures. These interrelated social issues have important implications for Africa's social development and the attainment of enhanced quality of life for Africa and its peoples. Among the most relevant social issues are population growth, the state of health in the face of the AIDS epidemic, environmental change (e.g. desertification and loss of flora/fauna), food security/insecurity, political stability, public security, socio-cultural transformation resulting from globalization, and economic transitions. The central purpose of this sociological course is to examine the nature, patterns, sources and consequences of the identified social issues as well as potential remedies.
