Prerequisite: six hours of philosophy or junior standing. A survey of the views of major philosophers from Plato to the nineteenth century on the nature of man's relation to society and to the state in the context of their wider philosophical (logical, epistemological, metaphysical and ethical) doctrines. Plato, Aristotle, Aquinas, Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Hegel and Marx are the chief figures covered, though others will be considered as time permits. (Irreg.)
