Prerequisite: junior standing. This course examines Western European representations of the Middle East, North Africa, and Asia from the Middle Ages to today. The aim is to consider how western culture constructs the Oriental Other in poetry, prose, drama, and film. Edward Said's "Orientalism" will serve as the critical foundation for the course.
