Prerequisites: History 2613 or 2623 or junior standing or permission of instructor. Examines both the history of ideas in modern Latin America as well as the history of intellectuals as a social group. We will consider intellectuals in the process of independence and the consolidation of nation states, the role of "race" in Latin American thought, and the relationship between European and Latin American thought.
