Prerequisite: Junior standing or permission of instructor. This course examines the major wars of the region beginning with the First World War and ending with the US invasion of Iraq. The course covers the Arab-Israeli conflict, the cold war, and the contest for control of the Persian gulf and oil markets. It also investigates the role of the great powers as well as the major Middle Eastern states in shaping international relations in the region over the past century. (Irreg.)
