Prerequisite: Junior standing and any 2000-level African and African-American Studies class. This course analyses the way race, gender, sexuality, and socioeconomic status have historically dominated, intersected and/or competed within the lives of African-American women. This course examines the way African-American women have drawn upon these internal struggles to serve as voices of power and agents of social change. Readings in this course will highlight the life experiences, work, and contributions of both early and contemporary African-American feminists, particularly their efforts toward advocating for black women's liberation, womanism, and black feminist agendas.
