3 This course will provide students with knowledge and theory of techniques associated with determinants of acid-base balance, blood gases, electrolytes, osmolality, hemoglobin, toxicology, therapeutic drug monitoring and endocrinology. Students learn to interpret and evaluate the performance of these laboratory methods and develop the ability to recognize levels of these biochemical components in both normal and pathophysiological states. Laboratory techniques range from general to specific assays and from the classical to state-of-the-art methodologies. In addition, students will be able to assess the quality and validity of laboratory generated values, determine when values are invalid and suggest ideas to troubleshoot methodologies. Students will also be able to produce and analyze statistical data for use in correlation, comparison and evaluation of laboratory techniques.
