This is the first course in a four-course sequence designed to develop cultural literacy about the complex heritage of western civilization. Using material from several disciplines, this course examines texts and ideas which provide information about the richness and diversity of western culture. It addresses themes of the natural world, the individual, spirituality, and the arts, themes which will continue throughout the sequence. Team taught, the course is based on the lecture/discussion format and integrates formal and informal writing throughout the semester. CR. 3
