This course focuses on a wide range of poetic forms, which may include folk ballads, hip hop, Eastern haiku, Western sonnet, traditional and exploratory verse. We will also study a variety of poets from 8th century China to 21st century United States. Attention will be given to history, culture, and identity, as well as cross-cultural poetic themes, e.g. love, the landscape, displacement. Students will analyze poetic formats and trends, explore a cross-section of international poets, and consider the place of the artist in the world today. Prerequisite: ENG201. CR. 3
