The first half of the course will explore the flowering of late medieval painting into the Renaissance of northern Europe in the context of the growth of the mercantile towns and the guild system; the new middle-class patrons; and the growing Protestant movements. The second half will examine the Italian Renaissance, with an emphasis on the social, religious, and political conditions within which the artists worked. Prerequisite: ARH106 or permission of the instructor. CR. 3
