Explores social forces that have shaped the distinctively American approach toward higher education and have led to transformation of higher education in contemporary society. Particular attention to relation between universities and elites within surrounding society, linkage between education and industry, norms and values that are presupposed by educational institutions, and bearing of sports on values and traditions of higher education.
