This course explores the defining principles and practices of sustainable agriculture, its scientific, historical and philosophical roots, and its potential environmental and economic impacts. Diverse approaches to agricultural production including conventional, organic, low-input, and precision agriculture are evaluated and compared in terms of sustainable use of land, soil, water and energy resources, using existing indicators of sustainability. The current status of sustainable agriculture is explored at local, national, and global levels, and consideration is given to the influencing effects of technological developments and policy measures.
