3 credits. This course introduces students to a growing crisis facing the U.S. criminal justice system: the growing numbers of mentally ill offenders in the criminal justice system. Following a consideration of the needs of individuals with mental illness, the course focuses on the treatment and management of mentally ill offenders at each stage of the criminal justice system, from initial contact with law enforcement to re-entry into the community.
