3 credits. A comparative examination of colonialism focusing on the cultural and intellectual dimensions of colonial encounters. Lectures and readings will emphasize European strategies and techniques of rule in the Arab world (including North Africa), Iran and India. Research and writing assignments will allow for the consideration of American involvement in Palestine-Isreal, Iraq and Afghanistan. Prerequisite: HIST 395. Instructor's permission required to waive HIST 395 for non-history majors.
