This course will focus on the social, political, economic, and cultural developments in Western Europe (with particular concentration on Italy) in the fourteenth, fifteenth, and early sixteenth centuries. Emphasis will be given to the questions of whether these developments are best understood as a repudiation or as a continuation of Medieval culture, and whether they should be seen as the origins of Modernity.
