This course examines several different examples of people in Diaspora whether forcibly or through voluntary migration. It seeks to understand the phenomenon of groups of people who are defined and who define themselves as separate entities from some putative mainstreams, with a separate point of origin. Classic Diaspora cultures to be covered include the Jewish Diaspora, the African Diaspora, and the Chinese Diaspora. More recent Diasporas across the Pacific will also be included. Pre: WRI 1200 and any introductory social science course.
