A general introduction to the nature of language and to the various fields of linguistics: human language vs. animal communication, phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, sociolinguistics, and language acquisition. Emphasis is on language situations familiar to students. Pre: WRI 1100 or WRI 1150; or consent. AL 2000 must be passed with a C or better to continue TESL.
