Study of major works in Western dramatic literature from 1850 to the present, with reference to cultural contexts, interpretive problems, and dramatic theory. From realism to the Theatre of the Absurd, dramatists include Ibsen, Chekhov, Pirandello, Artaud, Brecht, Genet, Beckett, Pinter, and others.
