An examination of the role of American political institutions in shaping welfare policy. This course focuses on the relationship between ideology, political structures, and the policymaking process. Attention will be given to the effects of race, class, and gender on the development of welfare policy over time, and their influence on key developments in the American welfare state, such as the passage of the 1935 Social Security Act.
