Employs theories of Marx, Max Weber, and Freud to analyze the tension between nationalist ideology and the realities of social conflict in Bismarck's Empire, the Weimar Republic, and the Third Reich; the success of democratic institutions in the Federal Republic; and the failure of the German Democratic Republic.
