This course examines anthropology's contribution to the taxonomy and representations of "race" and "culture" and its role in prescribing and proscribithe idea of interracial intimacy. Over the course of the semester, we will examine how the topic of mixing and miscegenation was invented, elaborated, and obsessed over by anthropologists, philosophers, judges, policymakers, film directors, and people raced as "mixed." Primary attention will be given toideas about mixing in the United States as a location from which to compare perspectives of social difference, "purity," and "hybridity" in other countriePrerequisite: Anthropology 104, or Sociology 111, or permission of instructor.
