Examination of 19th-century Romantic and Realist painting as critical responses to the period's dramatic political, industrial, and cultural transformations and as the foundation of artistic "modernity." Emphasis on issues of high and massculture; art and political voice; representations of non-Europeans; relevance of the canon; tensions between the urban and natural worlds; and creation of the avant-garde.
