Emphasis on France under Louis XIV and Louis XV, Old Regime society, and the intellectual creativity of the Eighteenth-Century Enlightenment. Also focuses on the widening confrontation between science and religion, the growth of Europe's overseas empire, and the emergence of the modern nation-state. Prereq.: HIST 1512. 3 s.h.
