A survey of American popular music from 1800 to the present. The course begins with a look at the sources of American popular music in European and African folk song and then surveys the development of major popular music styles such as musical theater, Tin Pan Alley, jazz, commercial country and rock and toll. The emphasis of the class is on listening to the music and placing the various movements in the appropriate cultural and historical contexts. Prerequisite: ENGL 102 or COMM 102 portfolio. Offered Spring semester, odd years.
