The course emphasizes procedures and strategies for including students with exceptionalities in the general classroom. Students are introduced to the concept of universal design for learning and how to create lesson plans that leave no child behind. The course emphasizes collaborating effectively with professionals and family members to meet individualized education plan goals and objectives in the general classroom. Students learn specific strategies to improve learning and behavior of students with high and low incidence disabilities as well as giftedness. The course provides workshop opportunities and includes a $30 lab fee for materials. As a service-learning intensive course, students spend 20 hours in public school and community inclusive settings.
