This course provides an overview of historical perspectives and current practices in special education. Units of study include definitions, characteristics, prevalence, assessment, and placement issues for specific disabilities and giftedness. The course also emphasizes multicultural, age, and familial considerations for students with exceptionalities. Strategies for improving the learning and behavior of students with exceptionalities are introduced. The course is service-learning intensive; students spend 20 hours in special education settings.
