Three hours lecture. Prerequisites: Junior or senior standing; 6 hours of sociology, or SOCY 110 and EDUC 309. Examines the social forces related to schooling and learning. Emphasis is placed on socialization and cultural transmission, teacher and student roles, informal networks in the school system and schools as bureaucratic institutions. The course also examines the application of sociological principles to the study of schooling and the examination of alternative educational movements.
