The course is designed to analyze the traditional status of women in Africa and the Middle East and movements to change their position in particular countries: Egypt, Israel, Turkey, Algeria, Ghana, Nigeria, Mozambique, etc. The focus of the course will be legislation and social practice in the twentieth century towards women on such topics as marriage (polygamy & monogamy) education, property ownership and political participation. Emphasis will be placed on the status of women in different socio-cultural situations: ruralurban context; non-Muslim and Muslim societies; and capitalist or socialist states. ( LA, HO2) ELIT 275 Jane Austen 3 s.h. An intensive reading of novels by a master of the English novel. Lectures will provide supplementary material on biography, criticism, the history of the novel, and contemporary literary developments. Prerequisites: COMP 100; LITR 100 or LITR 150. ( LA)
