3 s.h. This course examines social aspects of aging, health and the health care system in contemporary American society. Topics explored include demography of aging and health, biological perspectives on health in later life (including the social implications of physical changes and chronic illness), psychosocial perspectives on health in later life (including mental health, social support and religion), the older adult in the health care system (including interactions with health professionals, long term care services and settings, and endof- life issues), and societal aspects of our current health care system as related to older adults and late adulthood (including economic, political and ethical issues). Prerequisite: 3 s.h. SOCL.
