3 s.h. This course emphasizes the role of human service professionals in the prevention and treatment of substance use and abuse. The history, classification, and impacts of varying substances will be discussed from a systems perspective. Models of addiction, assessment, and methods of treatment/prevention will be explored, including impacts of substance use and abuse on children, families, society and culturally and ethnically diverse groups. Course will typically be offered once per year or as needed. Prerequisites: JrS, FAMS 160 "C" or better or SOCL 100 "C" better or PSYC 100 "C" or better.
