3 s.h. This course will examine the development of the American frontier from the Appalachian Valley in the mid 18th century to the trans Mississippi West and Pacific Coast region in the 20th century. Major topics will include but are not limited to: historical perception of the frontier in American History; immigrants on the Great Plains; the cowboy myth; the role of the US Army on the frontier; the anglo views of Native Americans. The American West as a cultural and political entity in the 20th century will also be considered. ( LA) Prerequisite: SoS or 3 s.h. 100-level HIST course.
