HIST 206 - Nation and Race

Institution:
SUNY College at Oneonta
Subject:
Description:
3 s.h. Racial and national identities are two of the most powerful forces shaping society and politics today, and yet they are of relatively recent origins. This course tracks the emergence of ideas about race and nation over the course of the modern era, culminating with the twentieth-century atrocities committed in the name of the nation. Although we will examine case studies in Latin America and postcolonial Africa, the bulk of the course will focus on the development of racial and national thought in the modern west.
