3 s.h. This course will provide a broad introduction to the study of birds. Topics will include bird classification, evolution, distribution, morphology, ecology and behavior. The laboratory section is designed to allow students to learn about the structure of birds and to identify the various families and species, focusing especially on those found in the eastern USA. Indoor laboratories focus on bird structure, anatomy and classification. Field excursions to a variety of habitats will emphasize identification and natural history of local species. These will provide opportunity to observe birds in a variety of habitats and will emphasize identification and natural history of local species. Students will get the opportunity to observe mist-netting and banding of song birds. Lecture-Laboratory. Two lecture exams plus final. Laboratories will be assessed using a variety of assignments and quizzes. Students must be prepared to attend a weekend field trip and also two Saturday excursions. These trips will usually take place in the second half of the semester. Students will be expected to have appropriate field clothes for winter conditions (including field boots). They will also need access to a reasonable pair of binoculars (a pair can be borrowed from the biology department, but keen students may prefer to purchase their own). ( LA, CPA) Prerequisite: BIOL 112, or BIOL 100, or BIOL 102.
