Globalization refers to the growing interconnectedness of the world's people economically, politically, socially, and culturally through the spread of mercantilism, capitalism, and the technologies and institutions that they have produced. This course explores this important and ongoing phenomenon ethnohistorically, ethnographically, and theoretically; introduces students to the political economy perspective in anthropology; critically examines the idea of bounded and independent cultures, societies, and nations; and illuminates the processes and consequences of globalization for peoples in various circumstances around the world. The readings include general overviews by anthropologists and ethnographic case studies. The course includes several writing assignments. ( LA) Prerequisite: ANTH 100.
