While the course is from an historical perspective, content concentrates instead on the supposed causes of the war and the social, political, and economic climate of the times as well as the war' s effects, both then and now. Includes special studies of Lincoln, Grant, Lee, Jackson, Jefferson Davis, Frederick Douglass, the role of the African-American soldier, prison camps, medical inadequacies, and the Battle of Gettysburg . ISW only.
