First of two courses introducing the basics of fire protection and fire science. Topics include fire department organization, safety on the fireground, bloodborne pathogens, protective clothing, self-contained breathing apparatus, hose maze, search and rescue procedures, smoke training, fire department apparatus, ropes and knots, shutting off utilities, ventilation and forcible entry, fire streams, nozzles, hose and related equipment, water supply and hydrants, ladders, hose and ladder evolutions, portable fire extinguishers, foam streams, salvage equipment and use, alarms and communications, arson detection, and public safety inspection. Satisfies NFPA 1001, Firefighter Professional Qualifications for Firefighter 1.
